Nederlandse blog.

bugs

Planet is turning into a mailinglist ;-) As I did a lot of triage in the past, I think the bugsystem can improved a lot in some areas.

First it should not be allowed for users to reopen a bug within say 24 hours of closing. This gives the advantage that people can not reopen directly after it was closed by someone, which is pretty irritating.

Second I think wishes should be closed if non of the developers want to implement it. A voting system as I made for KMail once could help to decide which whishes should stay open (confirmed), which can be closed and which can stay open for a while to see if it gets votes (unconfirmed).

Thirdly the current system still manages to get a lot of duplicates. The results of search which a user performs should be improved (for example let the user indicate what he wants to report: a wish or a bug and only query those to getter a better result).

The categories are not so used, I would suggest a stricter check for that, or asking it more explicitly. If I want to fix a bug in the kipi’s, I always gather all bugreports concerning that kipi, with the use of the categories, that is real easy and gives a nice overview of all problems with that kipi. Same goes for the priority.

Last item I wish to add is that we could consider automatic close of all bugs after a new stable version has been released, with the request to reopen if that bug is present in the new version. That gives the advantage that incidental reports get closed and that when you look at the bugs database, it is always up-to-date with bugs which are present in the current stable version. Reopening by the users is just a small efford for them, considering what they get in return….

Marketing, promoting, motivating???

These keyword are used a lot, last couple of days on this planet. I’ve read numerous blogs which talk about this subject. All nice and it sounds cool, but you have to practice it as well.

I’m actually pretty disappointed. This week digiKam received an awarded and KDE received an award. Now I can understand that the fact that in a lot of categories the prices have gone to non-KDE application pisses off some people.

But KDE is voted to be the best Desktop Environment is great news and a real achievement.

Not a single KDE developer has said anything about it, not about the KDE award, not about the digiKam award. I think we still have a lot to learn.

TUX 2005 ReadersÂ’ Choice Award

This morning I woke up and found a message from TUX magazine that digiKam was awarded with the TUX 2005 ReadersÂ’ Choice Award. Getting an award, especially those who are based on users voting is nice.

After I got to work I wrote a small piece for the digiKam website and the Dot. After that it was time to get some work done. The first day of the month is always filled with billing issues, which is always a mixture of excitement and boring administrative issues.

What started as a great day ended a bit depressing as it started to rain at the end of the day, which is not that annoying, but my house is getting painted atm and rain is not very helpfull.

It is good to see all the Malaga reports. Nice to read the progress you guys are making there.
