ICC profiles and digiKam

Implementation of raw support progresses nicely, we need to support ICC profiles for that and Paco is busy implementing that. Read the full story and look at example images here.

digiKam website relaunch

After a lot of hard work, mostly done by Jörn Ahrens, we are happy to announce the relaunch of our website. http://www.digikam.org/

To convince you to go there, let me point out some reasons to do that:
- you can download the Release Candidate of digiKam 0.8.0
- you can see how 0.8.0 looks like if you are still running an old 0.7.x version
- you can vote on the looks of the website
- there is an excellent tutorial howto install the svn version
- there are hints how to get 0.8.0 rc for debian and kubuntu!

So come and see our site, and test the release candidate for us!

Startersdag

Today I was at the Startersdag, it is an event organized by the dutch Chamber of Commerce and it gives the opportunity for starting companies to meet companies who can help them, like the Tax Office, Notaries, Social Service, banks and accountants.

We (as in KovoKs) were there to promote our company. We choose to promote open source a bit, so we set up a computer with TurboCash, OpenOffice.org.

Some things I found interesting. Our one meter Tux we setup at the roof of our booth was well known. People actually made the link to Linux.
I told some people that software is free to use, their reactions when I told them that were… weird. As in they could not believe it was free and I think they thought it was rubbish. I did not expect that to happen, I think it would have been easier to sell the product to them, when they should have paid for it ;-)

We had some nice contact with some companies, which might lead to some business, so I think we can repeat that next year. I think KDE should be represented there as well, so maybe we can set that up as well.

RAW image support is coming!

Gilles Caulier has started to replace imlib2 with a library written by Renchi Raju. This will bring 16 bits per pixel per channel to digiKam, with support for meta-data (like exif or iptc). Imlib2 only supports 8 bits per pixel per channel.

Today he reached his first success. With help of dcraw he loaded a raw image to digiKam, although it took 5 seconds to load on a Pentium III (not yet optimized), this will be a great step forward for digiKam.

You can see the proof here
