Wake up manufacturers!

Next to drupal 4.7.0 I received and played with another toy today. I received a box with the thing in it and in that box there was a cd. Hmmm. first problem. No cd-* in my computer. Booted an old and nearly broken laptop just to skim through the manual.

On another cd there was a new firmware for the device. To my disappointed there were only *.exe files on it. I do not have Windows here (I know others do), so I can’t play with the toy, it is useless if there is a firmware update going to be installed soon.

This makes Windows a dependency for the device. There should be a sticker on the device ‘works only with Windows’, I can then buy something else. But this is even more stupid: why in the world would you like to ship a product and include new firmware with that. Just install it… It’s like buying a car and when you receive it there is a new motor delivered with it, wich you have to install first. Would you accept that?

Anyhow, how long will it take before manufacturers wake up and provide support for something else then Windows? Isn’t there a significant user base already? If manufacturers keep sleeping, world domination will stay a dream.

Drupal 4.7.0

With some help of #drupal-support, I managed to upgrade my personal site to drupal 4.7.0. You certainly need the time to do it right; I forgot to switch to a non-custom theme, so after upgrading errors everywhere. Theme adjustments need to be done again (probably my fault), finding, updating and configuring some modules again and rearrage the blocks again. It’s acceptable for now…

I’ll think twice to start updating the digiKam site ;-)

Anyhow, those ajax thingies don’t work in (my?) konqueror at the moment, I hope there is a drupal fix for that soonish. I just hope I’m able to deal with the spammers better…

Let me mention ‘captcha’ again (thats good for at least one comment from someone mentioning it is not user friendly ;-))
