IPv6

After reading Planet Debian for the first time in months, I found a great article about IPv6. I was interested in that for a while now, but never took the time to do anything with it. My provider isn’t doing anything with IPv6, so I was under the impression that I could not do anything with it. Now I know I was wrong about that.

Basically I went to SixXs and requested a tunnel. This tunnel wraps all your ipv6 packets in normal ipv4 packets and sends it to the other end of the tunnel where it gets unwrapped and thrown over the internet as usual. The SixXs site provides software for a lot of distro’s which makes that tunnel so you do not have to make any difficult settings or what ever. It is a breeze with that software. The openSUSE package is pretty good, but the init.rd start part failed for me, but that was a detail.

After that I was able to enjoy browsing based on ipv6, for the sites that support it (ipv6.google.com seems faster to me than the normal site, but that’s probably my mind wanting that to be the case). There is also a free IPv6 news server for everyone. My irc-connections are also ipv6 based now. There is a Cool IPv6 Stuff-page, that kept me busy for a few hours.

In short: IPv6 is available for you too. It is the future, so get it now so you can tell your children that you already had IPv6 in 2008 (by then, they will not know it already existed 10 years or so).

Links wanted to your secret KDE documentation

To improve my kde.startpagina.nl I would like to provide a list with the best links to documentation/FAQ’s/HowTo’s/etc on the Internet. Stuff you wondered about, googled for it and found it after searching hours. The unique tip you received on a forum, or the best page with hidden config settings.

Things like a quick howto about installing flash in Konqueror, mp3 support in Amarok, hints and tips about IPv6 and KDE, support for using your ancient proxy server protocol, interesting articles about how to use kio in a split screen Dolphin between a gopher session and a fish session on the other side. You name it. Everything is ok, as long as it deals with KDE and user orientated. So please, go through your bookmarks and mail me anything interesting.

Leave a comment or email me your best links at tomalbers@kde.nl.

KDE Startpagina

In the Netherlands we have something called startpagina. It consists of all kinds of different prefixes and contains links to that subject. So we have linux.startpagina.nl, ubuntu.startpagina.nl, but that goes about every subject people can think of, there are 5,818 of them. Each page maintained by someone.

I discovered that there was no such thing like kde.startpagina.nl. So I created number 5,519 and filled it with all kinds of links I had stored in my bookmarks.

And now starts the fun stuff, I need your help! Send in the coolest KDE related links that you know so I can add them to the page. If you can check if it missing on the page that would be great, but could be hard for non-dutch speaking people. Send me a mail at tomalbers@kde.nl, leave a comment if you prefer that, or fill in the form here.

Wow, a new release of Mailody!

It has been a while, but now the time has come. We have made a new release: 1.5.0-alfa1. I think it is fair to explain why it took a while.

After the last release we started to work on Mailody4, this is the KDE4 version of Mailody. A lot has changed in KDE and we needed to adapt to it and help to make that happen. Not only the API changed, so we had to change the code, but also the buildsystem changed to CMake. But those are technical details.

More obvious is that we are now share the settings for incoming and outgoing mailservers with KMail and the rest of KDE. This means that when you switch between KMail and Mailody, you will not have to re-enter your settings.

Another big, big change is Akonadi. This KDE framework will be released in KDE 4.1 and we depend on it. So that means we do not longer use a SQLite backend for storing/caching the messages, we now use Akonadi. As that software is not completely finished, this will also be most of the bugs you will see now.

Basically you now see a completely new Mailody, although the interface has not changed much. The good news is that Akonadi will bring pop3 support and for example multiple accounts supports to mailody. Of course there are some new features waiting to be discovered for you: like the quick reply feature.

Have fun with testing Mailody 1.5 alfa1! See the updated site for download location and distro packages for Kubuntu and openSUSE…

Help to set a Guinness World Record

Had a great time in Berlin last week. A lot is already said about it, so I won’t repeat that. I just had a good time.

Now, for something completely different. SpreadFirefox has a mission to set a World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. The only thing you need to do is give your e-mailaddress so you will be notified when Firefox 3 is released. When that happens, download it! As it will bring some publicity for the open source world, it is a good initiative, so help to reach their mission!
