docs.kde.org
The last couple of days I’ve been working on http://docs.kde.org.
It was needed because it was dated, the documentation that was available there came from old KDE branches. Also the scripts contained several errors which caused the documentation not to be generated due to missing entities and stuff. I also made the pdf creation work again and made sure the search works again.
All minor issues, the main point I wanted to make is that the site is now actively maintained again, this time by the sysadmin-group. So, if something is wrong, just file a bug when you want an extra module on the left or an important language is missing or you find dead links or whatever.
I’ve also re-added the site to svn, so you can make changes yourself too. Enjoy the updated site!
Hi Physos, yes, it is a crappy code. It seems it was a rewrite of something else already. On the other side, the scripts seem to work quite ok and I’m surprised that array does not seem to slow down the site. I really like the generated pdf’s. So unless someone steps up to rewrite the stuff, i’ll just maintain it for now. It’s ok from a visitor point of view.
Since it is my crappy code I have to admit to my humilation, it is a rewrite of a not too bad python script :)
It was a fast hack at it’s time which did the job. Meant to be replaced with something better that never materialized. But as always in IT: The hack is the last thing to be replaced.
The PDF stuff is PhilRods code. So the good parts are other peoples, mine are the horrible hacks :)
Oh, the array slows down the site, but the machine it is on now, is much faster than the old one (ktown) so it does not show anymore :)
Thanks a lot for your work ! docs.kde.org really was out of date.

Thanks Tom,
your work is really appreciated!
Cheers,
Mark
Thanks for your work on updating this website! You rock! It was well needed and I am sure users will be happy to get up-to-date online docs!
I could not stand the crappy bash and PHP I wrote years ago. Last time I dived into it it took me almost an hour to understand somebody had made changes. Not to mention I had no idea about Phils PDF magic or the nice but evil perl search engine. I made it work again last time, but I guess I just hoped somebody would step up and say “hey away with that crap”.
I still hope sombody steps up and replaces all this mess I have done with something not loading a 400kb php array.
Thanks a lot for taking care of this. Now Marble has finally got some Online documentation.
Maybe we could now ask Nuno Pinheiro to come up with some KDE-4-style graphics for the site header.
Oh and if there is someone out there who could help Burkhard and me to improve the Marble user documentation (like e.g. adding class-room topics, etc.): We need you! Please contact us at marble-devel@kde.org.
