Thanks for a more detailed overview of the difference between Akonadi and QMF. One thing still slightly worries me about Akonadi though. Please correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm just trying to connect pieces together.

"... and I don’t see Akonadi used on thin mobile devices."

Given how Akonadi is becoming (or probably aims to be) *the* solution for PIM and related storage in KDE, this practically (though not technically) prevents KDE, and especially its PIM apps, from being ported to such class of devices. At the moment, one reason is the hard dependency on MySQL. Even with an SQLite backend, if Akonadi remains designed for desktops only (and laptops and netbooks by extension), it still might not be a viable option on smartphones. I think this is a similar situation with Nepomuk, whose only working/recommended backend is Java-based.

Neither Akonadi nor Nepomuk are required for KDE (they are optional dependencies), aside from KDE PIM which requires Akonadi. But still, being pillars of KDE, time will come when the features provided by Akonadi (at least to application developers, if not end users), will be expected to be present anywhere KDE is. And I'm quite sure that if ever KDE does go mobile, it will require a certain amount of PIM features.

What options will developers and KDE have for mobile devices in the (near?) future? (because end users theoretically should not have to worry about these low-level considerations)

@illissius

You beat me to it! =)

I would also suggest DNA sequencing for the proper storage of kittens in Akonadi.

@Thorsten Schnebeck

If some mobile phone company wants to have Akonadi running on a mobile phone we will support them as far as resources/man-power allows, however our priority is Akonadi on the Desktop!
The akonadimobile 'project' consists of 3 .cpp files... doesn't look active at all.

The main problem with storing the kittens would seem to be the serializing. Maybe via DNA sequencing? But that's not enough.

If I see a device like the Nokia N900 and think about that Maemo will be "Qt-ified" it would be a pitty to have only QMF and not Akonadi, but somehow the Akonadi devs seems to have not that much success in spreading their technology(?)
And then there was *I think* a GSoC project called akonadi mobile port
http://code.google.com/p/akonadimobileport/ Hmm...

Bye
