Giro starts in The Netherlands

Tomorrow (or rather today) the Giro d’Italia starts. In Amsterdam. No, Amsterdam has not moved to Italia, but The Giro just starts in The Netherlands for a couple of stages and moves to Italia after a few days.

On Sunday the stage goes from Amsterdam to Utrecht, but not in a straight line. The route also goes through a place called Houten. That’s where I lived for like 18 years and passes through a very small village called Schalkwijk, which is like 6km from where I live currently, and ends in Utrecht, where I lived for 4 years.

Coworkers and friends are all very excited and curious about this big event. Highways will be closed, city’s locked down and new park+ride places are discovered. There is even free (as in coins) parking in Utrecht. Everyone is planning to go and see them, and tries to think of options to see the group multiple times. Although the bikers are probably gone in two seconds, it is not like the Giro ends up in NL every year.

Of course I’m going to see this madness up close, in Schalkwijk. Be sure to watch TV, so you can see me. I’m the one in the white coat :) Anyhow enjoy the tour around The Netherlands, it’s a great country and the planned route gives a nice overview of the tiny part of the world where I live.

  1. It is strange to see so much interest about the Giro d’Italia outside Italy itself, while here (I live in Turin) is no longer so follow by people. Probably because we are too accustomed about it ;-)

  2. I am so envious right now! My team didn’t get an invite which sucks but it seems they will be doing the Amgen Tour of California which is probably the biggest stage race here in the US. Giro is probably my 3rd favorite, first being the TDF of course followed by the Paris-Roubaix. I will go through my recording now and look for you in your white coat. If I don’t see you, svn rm! :D

  3. @nixternal I was a fan, mostly of the TDF, but I kind of lost interest due to all the drugs related affairs. I mean, taking a day off to watch them closely on tv and finding out later that the winner of that stage was on drugs wasn’t worth taking the day off. But now it was so close by it was *great* to see it from close by. I’ve really enjoyed it. Hey, and remember I will disable your account if you svn rm :D

  4. @bob I think it only has interest to us because it is NL. Normally there is little interest in the Giro to be honest….
